Lil Tjay Updates Fans On Debut Album Status In "On The Come Up"

Lil Tjay is one the brightest young stars coming out New York right now. You’ve likely seen his name around and you’ve definitely heard his feature on Polo G’s smash hit “Pop Out” in the last couple months. The 18-year-old Bronx native is making a career out all that he’s lived through thus far, spitting melodic bars about his life growing up in the mean streets New York. He’s looked at as one the future torch-bearers the city and that title has come for good reason — Tjay already has a number successful tracks under his belt, including “Brothers” and “Ruthless.” We featured him on our recent article about the top 20 rappers aged 20 and under and he stopped by the fice to chat about his blossoming status as a rap star, how he got to this point and why we need to be paying attention.

On the latest episode On The Come Up, 18-year-old Lil Tjay speaks about his short career thus far and how he knew he was destined for big things. “I just hit the studio and started working,” says Tjay, as if his choice was purely instinctual. There doesn’t appear to have been much thought put into the decision to pursue a career in music. It’s as if he already knew his purpose and his body just guided him to the stu. “From when I first started it was serious. I went to the studio on the first day and I think the next time I went back was the next day. Every time I saved up my check so it was enough to go to the studio,” he said.

At first, Tjay had no clue what he was doing in the booth. He took some time to learn about ad-libs and transitions, picking up quickly and getting to work from there. Now signed to Columbia Records, Tjay doesn’t see much difference between his life as an independent artist and as a signed musician. He’s dropping less music now but when he does get the green light, he knows he’s got to release some magic. As for his No Comparison EP, he says he actually filled it up with five days’ worth songs he knew he could part with. If that tells us anything about what we can expect from his debut album, it means that Tjay could be sitting on something special whenever that drops.

Lil Tjay Updates Fans On Debut Album Status In "On The Come Up"

The 18-year-old’s debut album is not yet set in stone. There is no release date or title but he already has some songs put aside for it. As for his 10-year-plan, he thinks that he’ll still be rapping when he’s nearing his thirties. Of course, only time will tell where he’s standing at that point.

Lil Tjay has the potential to become the next big thing from New York. Watch his new interview with us above and be sure to peep our OTCU playlist below.

Meek Mill Becomes Co-Owner of Lids

Meek Mill is making boss moves.

The Philadelphia rapper and criminal-justice-reform advocate has become a co-owner in Lids after investing in North America’s largest retail seller of hats and licensed sports products. As part of his venture into corporate ownership, he will also lead the retailer’s creative strategy by releasing a limited-edition line of hats in August.

The opportunity was presented to Meek by his friend Michael Rubin, the co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, who is also the co-founder of Meek’s REFORM Alliance for criminal justice reform.

“This is my boss year. A lot of what I’m doing, I’m trying to get ownership in a lot of things to where I can still live comfortable the way I was living in my prime years as a rapper,” the 32-year-old MC told Business Insider. “I’m just trying to build a foundation of some good businesses that’ll keep me living good.”

He decided to invest in Lids because it hit close to home. “I’ve been shopping at Lids my whole life, wearing hats, fitteds, of course, fitted hats and caps, all types of hats,” explained Meek. “In our culture, it’s been a big thing. So, it was something I ain’t have to think twice about and always believed in, that it’ll work.”

Meek credits JAY-Z for inspiring his business acumen. “Basically, I’ve seen JAY-Z, and then I’ve watched other artists who came up around his time. He actually built something,” he said. “He built businesses, and he built things that made him become the man who he is, that we could call a billionaire guy. He built that, and I watched that, and I studied that. That’s why I’m working the way I’m working now to build a foundation for myself too.”

On Aug. 9, Meek is set to premiere his Amazon Original documentary series Free Meek, chronicling his fight for criminal justice reform. “If you’re not informed about it, if you don’t have any understanding of the system and the flaws of the system, I hope it’ll open your eyes and give you a taste of what’s going on in life.”

A Series Of Cryptic Tweets By Stevie J Has Fans Thinking Him & Faith Evans Broke Up

Just last month, we reported that rapper, Stevie J, was filing for custody his daughter, Bonnie Bella, with Joseline Hernandez, after he accused Joseline  purposely cutting Bonnie out his life since she moved to Miami with Bonnie to live with another guy. Stevie claimed that he’s now more financially and mentally stable to care for his daughter, since being married to Faith Evans, calling on his family, adult children and extended family as great resources for his daughter’s well being. Now, however, rumors have been circulating the Interwebs, that Stevie’s relationship with his wife has privately ended.

Stevie J , 47, and his wife 1 year, Faith Evans, 46, started sparking breakup theories after fans noticed that the two unfollowed each other on social media. As well as that, Stevie took to Twitter in the AM yesterday, to post a series cryptic tweets seemingly hinting at trouble in paradise. “Ones insecurities can damage them,” he wrote, as well as: “cherish what you love just know nothing will last forever.” These peculiar tweets come only a week after the couple shared a preview them celebrating Juneteenth together, clearly still boo’ed up whilst spending the holiday together in San Jose.

OJ Simpson Explains How Michael Jackson Helped Him Hide From Media

OJ Simpson elicited a media firestorm back in 1994 when he went on trial for the alleged murder his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her lover, Ron Goldman. Since then, Simpson ended up going to jail for an unrelated crime and has since been released for a couple years. The former NFL legend is now looking to rebrand himself the only way one does in the 21st century, with a Twitter account. His account already has over 800K followers and he has talked about a plethora topics including fantasy football and his rumored relationship with Kris Jenner.

In one his most recent videos, OJ talks about the time the media would come to his house in the midst the allegations against him. As he explains, Michael Jackson called him and urged him to bring the kids to Neverland ranch so they could hide out for a while.

“My house was under siege by the media . . . Michael found out, he called me, he said, ‘O.J.! You’ve gotta take the kids up to Neverland Ranch,” Simpson recalled. “They’d love it!’ And I did. And it was wondrous. The kids would come up, they would bring some their friends. It was so great that I started bringing my adult friends up there. Michael was never there, but he always had gifts for the kids.”

Simpson seemed to be quite appreciated the gesture especially when you consider what was going on in his life at the time.

Is Instagram About to Eclipse Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music for Artist Discovery?

Artists are increasingly using Instagram Stories as a mega-tool for promoting their songs.  Is that already casting a shadow on streaming platforms?

In fact, Instagram’s recent music enhancements are only fueling a pre-existing behavior towards sharing and discovering music.  The exact impact of Instagram’s music expansion is difficult to gauge at this stage, though early indicators suggest that a serious music platform is emerging.

Artists have already gotten the memo.  Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” gained after Justin Bieber shared an Instagram Story of the song.  19-year-old pop artist Maude Latour released her summer song “Superfruit” and encouraged fans to share the song on their Stories.  Drake and Future used the platform to announce What A Time to Be Alive.

Stories like these — pardon the pun — are becoming more commonplace.  Now, Instagram and Facebook are hoping to fan the flames and assume a dominant position in music.

Instagram included album covers and last year. The feature has grown increasingly popular since its introduction, making Instagram a place of discovery for younger people.  In one familiar use case, fans are exposed to new music through browsing their friends’ Stories, seeking out more music from the same artist or album through other streaming services.

Of course, no platform is an island.  The story on ‘Old Town Road’ can’t be told without TikTok, for example.  And fans routinely hover between platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify.  Once there’s a fire, it usually spreads everywhere, though Instagram is aiming to become the critical spark.

With more young people discovering new artists through Instagram, it’s no wonder the network is focusing on music. Devi Narasimhan, a spokesperson for Instagram, declined to share statistics on music sharing with DMN.  But she does say the company hopes to find more ways people can “share their moments and interact using music.”

Anecdotally, Instagram seems to be rapidly gaining ground on this front.  Mashable recently ran a piece discussing how many high school and university students prefer Instagram as a music discovery platform. But even before the inclusion of music in Stories, Instagram’s growth was fueled by music lovers.

In a 2015 study, Nielsen surveyed 3,500 Instagram users to ask why they use the service and for what type of content. That survey determined that Instagram users are 42% more likely to spend money on music in a year, compared to the general population.

Is Instagram About to Eclipse Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music for Artist Discovery?

People on Instagram who follow their favorite artists and bands spend twice as much on music as the general population, the report concluded. Instagram users also spend 30% more time listening to music weekly, compared to the general U.S. population.

And the most popular genre for Instagram users? Pop tops the charts, with hip-hop and R&B taking a close second. That’s slightly different than Spotify, though if tracks like ‘Old Town Road’ have taught us anything, genre distinctions are oftentimes unimportant to music fans.

James Harden Responds To The Haters Who Say He Always Travels

James Harden is one the best players in the NBA thanks to his fensive talents that saw him win the NBA MVP trophy back in 2018. Harden was a finalist for the MVP award again this year and ended up losing to Giannis Antetokounmpo the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite Harden’s abilities, he has been heavily criticized for his step-back jumper and the fact that he appears to be traveling when he does it.

Harden was recently speaking at an event and spoke about his playing style which has been emulated by younger players. The Rockets superstar is honored that young people are taking a liking to how he plays and when it comes to the haters, he’s not too worried.

“That’s when you’re doing something right, right? Then you have the haters who talk about ‘Is that a travel?’ ‘Is that too many steps?’ or, ‘Why is he wearing this? He doesn’t look right.’ That’s just the haters. That’s when you know you’re doing something right when you’ve got people talking about you,” Harden explained. “I let the haters keep talking.”

Afterward, Harden spoke about the Rockets and what they need to do next season in order to get over the hump. As Harden explained, all the team has to do is stay healthy and they’ll be fine.

"The Office" Fans Launch Petition To Keep The Show On Netflix

We recently reported on The Office being pulled away from Netflix in 2021. With the rise and popularity streaming services, it’s no surprise that in such a competitive climate, other networks would be doing everything in their power to create streaming services that set them apart from one another. As such, Netflix announced that it would be pulling away every season The Office from its platforms as NBC preps to launch its own streaming service. The news deeply saddened the fans who chose to take matters into their own hands by starting a petition. We’ve previously seen this with Game Thrones when disappointed fans asked for the final season the series to be entirely remade. Although their chants were dismissed, there is ever any harm in at least trying.

According to Complex, the petition was first launched on Tuesday and called for NBC to allow The Office to remain on Netflix indefinitely. Universal Television reportedly held an auction wherein NBC Universal won The Office against Netflix, despite the streaming giant’s $90 million dollar/a year fer to keep it for five extra years. Moreover, Hulu, Amazon, and Apple have also taken meetings to acquire the streaming rights to their original shows. Hence the competition definitely continues to stiffen. We shall see how far this petition will take them.

Lena Waithe Cites Will Smith & Denzel Washington As Not Supporting Black Talent

We recently reported on Lena Waithe calling out Black A-list actors for not supporting Black films or movies with predominantly Black talent. The producer The Chi sat down with the New York Times to discuss her frustrations with the lack Black financers and investors in Black-affiliated projects. And the many people she has called out, the show creator specifically called out Will Smith and Denzel Washington for being apart those who do not involve their coin. During a sit-down with the BET Experience Genius Talks, Waithe clarified that there is no beef between her and the named actors.

“Look, Will, Denzel, I have a relationship with both camps, no shade no tea, I was just texting with Jada—everybody’s fine,” she said. “But ultimately, I’m saying for anybody who has money and is] black, I think should be held to finance at least one or two black filmmakers trying to make their first film. I just think it’s important because then what will happen is we’re keeping the well within our community. I know that it is difficult to walk into a room white financiers trying to explain why this particular black story should be told.”

Love & Hip Hop ATL Episode 15 Recap: Akbar V Publicly Humiliates Shekinah

In this week’s Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta episode, Mimi blasts Stevie J for sabotaging her relationships, Young Joc gets in trouble for flirting with some hairstylists, Akbar V puts Shekinah on blast publicly and things go left at a couple’s seminar.

Check out the previous episode’s recap here

Warning: Spoilers Ahead.

MIMI, TY &… STEVIE?

Mimi and Stevie J were at crosshairs in this week’s episode. According to Mimi’s girlfriend, Ty, Stevie J has been continuously taunting her and their relationship social media. Stevie J even went on to tell Ty that she should consider adopting the daughter he shares with Mimi. Ty brought the issue to Mimi and as such, the couple thought it best to have Stevie J finally addressed. Mimi barged in on Stevie J’s studio session and confronted him. Following what appeared to be an attempt at a mature, adult conversation, things quickly turned sour as Mimi began growing annoyed with Stevie J’s antics. Their conversation ended with Mimi getting physical which made Stevie J leave the room.

Although Stevie has been dating Faith Evans for some time now, Mimi is convinced his attacks on Ty are fueled by jealousy. Could this be true? Does Stevie J truly not want to let Mimi go? We hope to gain greater insight on this in the upcoming episodes.

AKBAR V TAKES ON SHEKINAH

Despite Sierra ruining her opportunity to speak to Hiram Hicks & Stevie J, Akbar V was able to snag a studio session with Hiram. After the two chopped it up in the studio, Hiram introduced Akbar V to his wife, Pooh Hicks. The two got friendly very quickly and began discussing the drama that had been going on throughout the season. The two bonded over their equal dislike Sierra, Shekinah and Tokyo Vanity. Surprisingly, Akbar V admitted to having beef with Shekinah because she had a child with one Shekinah’s ex-boyfriends. Akbar V alleged that Shekinah has since been throwing shade at her.

Pooh, who always finds her way in the middle  all drama, encouraged Akbar V to crash Rasheeda and Kirk’s couple seminar to address Shekinah. And like clockwork, Akbar V showed up to the seminar. Akbar viciously attacked Shekinah and threw some serious accusations at her as well. The whole thing ended in a messy fight.

YOUNG JOC GETS REAL

As seen in the previous episode, Young Joc asked Shekinah to hit up his hair salon to see why the business was doing so poorly. Yet when Shekinah showed up and further investigated, she realized there was more to it than Joc let on. Joc’s business partner, Sharonda, claimed business was impacted by Joc’s unpressionalism towards the stylists. The reality star was accused flirting with the new hires, which made it difficult for Sharonda to exercise her authority and keep the business afloat. Shekinah shared the news with Karlie in this week’s episode, hence it is only a matter time before everyone finds out.

Additionally, Joc met up with his baby mothers to let them know he was interested in marrying Kendra. Although they initially showed some skepticism in Joc’s ability to remain faithful to Kendra, they were still approving it. They even requested to meet with Kendra to fer their blessing.

RASHEEDA & KIRK’S COUPLE SEMINAR

Rasheeda and Kirk’s continued support to couples reflected in the launch  a couple’s seminar in this week’s episode. Most the cast was in attendance and Shekinah was the host. Kirk and Rasheeda were questioned on several aspects their successful marriage and things got incredibly awkward. It seemed as though the couple did not always agree on certain topics and the latter only hinted at an underlying issue they were not discussing. We previously saw what went down when Jasmine and Rasheeda met up to talk. Moreover, Kirk admits that ever since it happened, Rasheeda has been distant. Prior to things going left for the couple on a public platform, Akbar V showed up and put Shekinah on blast. The unexpected fight took the attention away from the couple’s troubles, but all still noticed the tension.

Adidas UltraBoost X Undefeated Collab Returns In "Blackout" Colorway

Adidas and Undefeated have been frequent collaborators for a while now with their last pair coming in the patriotic Adidas UltraBoost 1.0. Just a few weeks later, Undefeated is teasing a brand new colorway the Adidas x Undefeated UltraBoost 1.0 which is looking to be a lot more lowkey than the first pair that came out. The teaser images were posted to the brand’s Instagram page and shoe f some regular photos and well as some on-foot pictures to wet your palate.

The shoe goes for the popular triple-black aesthetic, although Undefeated’s signature branding can be seen throughout. For instance, the primeknit upper is black and so is the Boost midsole. The difference is that the upper has “UNDEFEATED” written across the toe box in a silver reflective font. Five strike branding and the Adidas logo can both be found on the tongue in that same reflective style which will certainly add flair to the shoe.

As right now, there is no release date or price associated with the shoe although Undefeated did say that it will be coming soon. Stay tuned for updates as we will be sure to bring them to you.

Willow Smith "Loves Men & Women Equally" & Is Entertaining Polyamory

Polyamorous (polygamy and polyandry) relationships aren’t anything new, but they aren’t always accepted by Westernized cultures. Yet, there is still a small percentage people who choose to engage in romantic relationships with multiple partners. Jada Pinkett Smith, her daughter Willow Smith, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris explored this topic on the most recent episode  Red Table Talk as they spoke with a married couple and their girlfriend—a relationship known as a “throuple.”

During their discussion, Willow revealed that she’s been exploring the aspects a poly relationship. “Monogamy, I feel, and this is just for me, I feel actually inhibits you from learning those skills evolving past those feelings insecurity,” she said. “That feeling ‘Oh, no, you can’t do this…if you were to do this, the world would crumble on both sides.’ There’s just no freedom, it’s all fear based.”

Willow said she believes traditional marriage concepts are slightly oppressive to women and “steeped in this idea ownership.” She continued, “This is the thing, there’s so many different kinds people in this world and so many things to learn, so many people to learn from and I don’t see the benefit in not learning those things or not putting myself in a position to learn as much as I possibly can from as many people as I possibly can.”

There are people who enter into polyamorous relationships solely because they’re attracted to the idea being able to have sex with more than one person. Willow claims that’s not her intention at all and she’s open to a multiple-partnered relationship if “your intention is to create more love, more understanding, more community, more compassion in your life.”

She later added, “I love men and women equally. I would definitely want one man, one woman. I feel like I could be polyfidelitous with those two people. I’m not the kind person who is constantly looking for new sexual experiences. I focus a lot on the emotional connection and I feel like if I were to find two people the different genders I really connected with and we had a romantic and sexual connection, I don’t feel like I would have the need to find more.” Willow added, “”I really couldn’t see myself in a quadruple, but personally, male and female, that’s all I need. One each.”

Jada didn’t seem to have a problem with Willow’s choices and told her she supported her. The actress also noted that she feels as if she’s been in a non-sexual, three-person relationship with her husband Will Smith and Will’s ex-wife (and mother Will’s son Trey), Sheree Fletcher.

Hip Hop Album Sales: Future’s "SAVE ME" Plummets Out Of Top 40

Hip Hop’s chart dominance took a dip in the latest Billboard 200. New albums from Madonna (No. 1), Bruce Springsteen (No. 2) and Bastille (No. 5) ruled the week while no rapper was able to debut in the Top 25.

Lil Keed’s Long Live Mexico ended up being Hip Hop’s best debut of the week, coming in at No. 26. Further down, GoldLink’s Diaspora cracked the Top 80 at No. 77.

Arguably the biggest development of the week was Future’s SAVE ME experiencing a dramatic drop. After entering the chart at No. 5, the EP fell out of the Top 40 to No. 41. Meanwhile, Polo G’s Die A Legend continued to be a surprisingly strong performer by maintaining its spot in the Top 10.

Future’s EP Drastically Falls

Last week, Future had the best-charting Hip Hop release on the Billboard 200. But this time around, the Freebandz leader’s SAVE ME EP tumbled all the way down out of the Top 40.

Future’s latest work fell to No. 41 after moving 13,665 total album equivalent units. The seven-track project previously debuted at No. 5 off the strength of 41,529 units sold.

Polo G Proves He’s No Fluke

Polo G’s first studio album Die A Legend followed up its No. 6 debut with another good performance. The Columbia Records artist settled in at No. 7 in his second week on the chart.

Once again, the “Pop Out” creator leaned heavily on the strength of his streaming numbers. Polo G only sold 218 copies in terms of pure album sales but ended up with a tally of 28,683 total units.

Lil Keed Earns Hip Hop’s Top Debut Of The Week

A relatively quiet release schedule allowed Lil Keed to secure the top-charting debut among rappers this week. The 300 Entertainment signee reached No. 26 after racking up 17,486 total units.

The Young Thug protege’s closest competition was GoldLink, whose Diaspora album entered the chart at No. 77. Keed’s LP marks another example of the increased emphasis on streaming, selling just 267 copies in pure album sales.
