DJ Khaled Allegedly Mad His 2.4/5 Rated “Father Of Asahd" Didn’t Go No. 1

There are a lot of rumors floating around regarding DJ Khaled’s reaction to Father Of Asahd failing to nab the coveted No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 last week. Instead, it debuted at No. 2 right behind Tyler, The Creator’s IGOR.

Initial reports suggested the Grammy Award-winning producer stormed into the Epic Records offices with an entourage and threw a temper tantrum over the No. 2 debut.

Then, Khaled uploaded and swiftly deleted an Instagram video where he appeared visibly upset about the album’s performance, which only added fuel to the fire. People naturally assumed he was aiming his vitriol at the Odd Future mastermind.

But according to The Blast, that wasn’t the case. Khaled was reportedly furious with Billboard after they reneged on an agreement involving merch bundles, squashing his chances at reaching the No. 1 spot.

Multiple sources close to Khaled said over 100,000 album downloads were “disqualified” due to a promotion Billboard said “was not approved.”

Prior to the album’s release, Khaled offered a bundle which included Father Of Asahd and nutritional supplements, something initially approved by Billboard. By purchasing the bundle, customers received a digital download, which was supposed to count towards album numbers.

However, Billboard claimed they didn’t “approve the copy” of the promotion. The sources say Billboard “arbitrarily” disqualified his downloads from the bundle, which ultimately led to his No. 2 debut and gave IGOR the chance to rise to the top.

The situation draws parallels to Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott’s debacle last year. Nicki was outraged Scott’s Astroworld project debuted at No. 1, ahead of her Queen album. She, too, blamed merch bundles.

And although Khaled reportedly did go into the Epic offices, he only brought one assistant to “passionately speak” about the hiccup.

Billboard has acknowledged there are flaws in their numbers systems. In an article dated May 31, Billboard admitted not all of Khaled’s sales counted and indicated they are working on the rules for bundles.

“Billboard requires all merch bundles to be submitted in advance for approval,” it read. “As these offers have become more voluminous and creative, Billboard is reviewing its rules regarding the bundling of albums with merch.”

Father Of Asahad received a 2.4 out of 5 rating from HipHopDX, explaining Khaled’s formula has simply gone “stale.”

Beyoncé’s Publicist Calls Out BeyHive After Viral NBA Finals Moment

The BeyHive is being put in check.

On Wednesday (June 5), Beyoncé and JAY-Z attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but it was the off-the-court action that made headlines when Nicole Curran, the wife of the Golden State Warriors owner, leaned over to speak with the billionaire rapper, prompting what appeared to be a side eye from Beyoncé. It wasn’t long before Curran faced backlash from the BeyHive, who jumped in to defend their queen.

After the viral moment, Beyoncé’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, acknowledged the incident in an Instagram post. While reflecting on the anniversary of the “On the Run II” tour, she also called out the BeyHive for “spewing hate” and encouraged them to spread love in Queen Bey’s name.

“I am looking back today at the start of The OTRII tour, one year ago,” she wrote alongside a photo of the Carters from the tour. “It was a place of joy, unimaginable entertainment from two of the best performers in the world, and a place of love. Every single day on that tour I saw love. Which is why I also want to speak here to the beautiful BeyHiVE. I know your love runs deep but that love has to be given to every human. It will bring no joy to the person you love so much if you spew hate in her name. We love you.”

Curran said she received death threats following the incident and had to turn off her Instagram comments before deactivating her account. Before doing so, she addressed the situation, telling fans that she meant no harm.

“Listen Beehive,” she commented on a Shade Room post. “I respect Queen B. I love her! I talked to her husband twice tonight. First, to take a drink order for them both when they arrived as they were our guests. Second, to explain why I gave his wife a rose from a fan. All of this has been taken out of context. I am a happily married woman. Telling me to kill myself?????? Somehow I don’t think she would support this.”

Curran said that she didn’t know anything was wrong until she started receiving texts from friends. “There was no hostility,” she told ESPN. “I was trying to be a good hostess. I’ve never experienced cyberbullying like this. I can’t believe our players go through this. That kids go through this.”

Kevin Durant Has "Good Chance" Of Playing In The NBA Finals: Report

Kevin Durant has been out the Golden State Warriors lineup since the second round the playfs thanks to a right calf strain. While the Warriors keep saying they believe Durant will be back in the NBA Finals, there hasn’t been any concrete information surrounding Durant’s injury and whether or not he’ll be able to heal in time. Down 2-1 in the Finals to the Toronto Raptors, the Warriors are finding it tough to scrape wins together without their star and if they don’t get him back soon, then it could spell trouble for the two-time reigning champions.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr fered an update on Durant recently and explained how he’s confident the two-time NBA Finals MVP will return before the series is over.

“I do think he’ll play in the series,” Kerr said on KNBR 680. “I think there’s a good chance that he plays in Game 5 or 6.”

Connor Letourneau the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Durant hasn’t been cleared to practice yet and there hasn’t been any indication when he will be.

Despite the injury to Durant, they will be getting some much-needed firepower back as Klay Thompson will be in the lineup for Game 4 which goes down tonight in Oakland.

Thematic Surpasses 1 Billion Song Plays for Repped Artists

The LA-based Thematic is built on a simple premise: ‘demonetization-free’ licensing for content creators on platforms like YouTube in exchange for artist and song promotion.

Now, in its public beta alone, Thematic, a company focused on enabling music artists and content creators to support each other easy music licensing and cross-promotion, says it has facilitated more than 30,000 song placements in over 20,000 creator videos, driving more than 1 billion song plays for repped artists.

The company has constructed a licensing-safe space that prominent YouTube celebrities can tap into, without worrying about lawsuits, demonetizations, or video removals down the road.  Early beta-stage participants include ODESZA, Late Night Alumni, as well as AWAL Recordings artists Lauv, Betty Who, and Matt Nathanson.

“AWAL is at the forefront of the intersection of music and technology and we approach all campaigns from an artist-first perspective,” said AWAL head of artist marketing, North America, Michael Pukownik.  “Through our initiatives utilizing Thematic qualified influencer content, we’ve been able to layer in additional marketing and promotional channels for our artists’ releases.”

Sounds like the way things should be for the entire music industry, though of course, the reality is anything but. Thematic is trying to solve a pretty serious licensing problem, and recently partnered with DMN to spread awareness of its monetization solution.

In fact, the entire company rose from the ashes of a nightmarish legal battle between YouTube celebrity makeup artist Michelle Phan and Ultra Records.

According to fellow Thematic co-founder and CEO Marc Schrobilgen, Phan had been supporting many music artists through her YouTube channel, including Kaskade, before the murky waters of music licensing quickly overwhelmed her.

The result was a mega-million dollar lawsuit filed in 2014 by Ultra, which alleged massive copyright infringement.  But strangely, the suit was filed even though Ultra-signed artists like Kaskade publicly defended Phan, adding to the messiness and confusion of the situation.

Phan may have been singled out, with Ultra eager to control its YouTube licensing and revenue streams. “She had a target on her back,” Schrobilgen told us.

The messy legal action resulted in an undisclosed settlement, though the stressful episode motivated Phan to solve the problem in a serious way.  The result is the Thematic platform, which is now racking up some serious stats.

“From the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to empower and give back to creators,” Michelle Phan told us.  “Since uploading my first video 12 years ago, I’ve experienced lawsuits and seen first-hand what happens when big music labels come in and make copyright infringement claims.

“I understand intimately the challenges facing creators today.  Through Thematic, I hope to protect creators and artists and provide a platform where they can connect, safely and free.”

She’s really strong and she helps her friends and takes care people when they need it,'” Krysten Ritter (who plays Jessica) previously stated about the series.

“And the fact that she’s not super hot or super sexy and just kind looks really normal and wears comfortable clothes, I think it’s a great image for boys and girls.”

Eventbrite Gets Its Ticketfly Class Action Lawsuit Tossed — For Now

An Illinois judge has dismissed the class action lawsuit filed against Eventbrite over the Ticketfly hack.

Claimants have until July 9th to file an amended complaint.

Last May, a hacker sent emails to Ticketfly about security flaws that existed in its WordPress blog. When Ticketfly did not address the issue, the hacker, calling himself ‘Ishakdz,’ breached the site and gained access to 26 million user’s information.

Ishakdz asked Ticketfly to supply one bitcoin (worth about $7,500 at the time) in exchange for the data.

When Ticketfly didn’t pay the hacker’s ransom, he posted all 26 million customer’s information online. That information included names, addresses, emails, passwords, phone numbers, and credit card details. The event prompted Ticketfly’s parent company Eventbrite to be named in a class action lawsuit over the breach.

Eventbrite formally in March by asking the judge to dismiss the case.  Eventbrite said the claimants had failed to prove that they bought their tickets from Ticketfly.

Lawyers also argued that even if the data grab had impacted the claimants, they could not prove that direct harm resulted.

Judge Michael T. Mullen agreed with Eventbrite’s assessment of the situation. He dismissed the lawsuit as it currently stands and said plaintiffs would need to explain how their contract with Eventbrite had been breached. In addition, plaintiffs must provide evidence that the data hack caused concrete injury.

Plaintiffs in the case argued that having to pay to monitor their credit was tangible harm, but the judge disagreed. He told plaintiffs that “potential harm” is not a ble reason to proceed with the suit. If the two plaintiffs amend the lawsuit with new evidence by July 9th, it can continue, however.

If the plaintiffs do provide sufficient evidence, Eventbrite plans to claim that the lawsuit should be judged in California rather than Illinois.  Judge Mullen said he would consider that argument if the plaintiffs file an amended lawsuit by the deadline.
