Slimkid3 Recalls Making The Pharcyde "Drop" Video In Their Underwear

Los Angeles, CA – While the unique incarnation of The Pharcyde could also be a factor of the previous, Slimkid3 nonetheless appears again on these days with a happy sense of accomplishment. After all, the celebrated Hip Hop group crafted two basic albums throughout their tenure — 1992’s Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde and 1995’s Labcabincalifornia.

Labcab‘s first single was “Drop,” which got here with some of the progressive movies Hip Hop had seen as much as that time. Directed by famed videographer Spike Jonze, the visible was meant to seem like it was shot backwards.

But as simple as that sounds (simply shoot it in reverse, proper?), it was a monumental mission that required all 4 MCs — Slimkid3, Fatlip, Bootie Brown and Imani — to memorize their lyrics backwards.

“Spike Jonze was delivered to the desk to speak about concepts and he picked this music significantly as a result of he labored with the Beastie Boys,” Slimkid3 tells HipHopDX. “He was like, ‘What if we did this ‘Drop’ video going backwards and reverse and stuff like that?’ We’re like, ‘Oh shit. Hell yeah.’

“Here’s what he instructed us, ‘You be taught the lyrics in reverse, we’ll shoot every little thing as if it’s going backwards, then flip the movie round after which it has that ahead sensation.’ But the one means we are able to promote that is to do the lyrics in reverse, too. So we have been learning cassette tapes of the music backwards.”

That proved to be fairly the feat. It required skilled coaching and hours upon hours of learning.

“We had a linguist are available in and train us,” Slimkid3 explains. “He needed to break the shit down. It was like a special language. So we studied on the airplane, we studied on the prepare, we studied all over the place to attempt to get this. I really feel like we would have liked another day and we’d have had that lip sync seamless. Because it’s like, ‘OK, now we obtained it — simply even forming the phrases and what have you ever — and now we gotta put it in movement.

“Like, ‘Oh fuck. Now the digital camera’s on and we’re altering garments and going by means of all these elements.’ Then we had a dialog about what can be recent backwards. I used to be like, ‘We can un-paint the portray.’ We have been presupposed to have extra bouncing balls bouncing up the steps whereas we have been happening. So, there was different cuts of it. You can see the magic of the balls bouncing up the steps and there was simply a lot stuff that we have been like, ‘Let’s strive all of it.’”

Looking again on the making of “Drop,” Slimkid3 does have one remorse. There’s a scene the place all of them strip all the way down to their underwear whereas wandering the streets of Los Angeles. He believes they need to’ve simply went for it and filmed the scene completely bare.

“I feel we should always have took an additional step, and I’m positive the blokes would agree, to go all the best way bare — , all of the fucking means downtown,” he admits. “The solely folks that knew about what was going to occur was us. The folks strolling down the road and ready for the bus and all that shit, they didn’t know shit. It was early within the morning, like four:30 or 5:00, and there we have been doing this scene.

“The folks would even change as a result of they gotta go to work. Here we’re on this alley doing this occasion and stripping all the best way all the way down to our underwear and shit like that. We obtained soaking moist. We did six takes or some shit. So that was six completely different outfits. It was simply an enormous enterprise.”

Although the visible turned out as Jonze had envisioned it — full with cameos from Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Adam “MCA” Yauch and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz — Slimkid3 will always remember how “loopy arduous” it was to shoot.

“You needed to sustain,” he says. “You didn’t know the place you have been going. You have been simply going backwards and saying shit. Then you needed to fall off digital camera and the digital camera saved pushing by you whereas different stuff was taking place. It was fairly magical although. It was a number of enjoyable. It was probably the most enjoyable I had making a video to be sincere. It was actually good.”

Sadly, The Pharcyde began to deteriorate not lengthy after Labcab‘s launch. Slimkid3 and Fatlip went on to type The Bizarre Ride, whereas Bootie Brown and Imani nonetheless carry out as The Pharcyde.

Slimkid3 additionally has one other group referred to as TRDMRK alongside Jurassic 5’s DJ Nu-Mark and newcomer Austin Antoine. The trio launched its first self-titled EP earlier this month.
