Thousands of Coachella attendees converged upon the festival’s main stage on Sunday night at 9pm, grabbing an ideal spot for the main headliner Calvin Harris and enjoying some of quirky pop idol’s Sia’s set in the meantime. While casual fans might have expecting little more than singles like “Chandelier” backlit by LED visuals, Sia pleasantly surprised attendees, upending the mainstage status quo with a psychedelic show.
Her hour-long set played out more like a performance art saga rather than typical festival fare, proving that music does not need flashy showmanship to make an impact. Her surprise performers included Maddie Ziegler, who assumed her regular role as Sia’s emotional essence, along with Kristen Wiig, Tig Notaro, and Paul Dano, who have played roles in her eclectic music videos in the past. Their choreography synced perfectly with her meaningful lyrics and each transition blended the show together nicely, putting fans in a theater-like setting that struck a deep chord within.
The intense performance was unlike anything fans expected, even leading the Coachella subreddit to dub it “the concert performance of a generation.”
