Shazam Now Identifies Songs Played on Other Apps — But Only on Android

Prior to its acquisition by Apple late last year, Shazam had bled millions.

Breaking down the song recognition app’s for 2017, the company reported a gross profit of £38.4 million ($50.6 million at the historic exchange rate), up just 2.3% year-over-year.

While that sounds good at first, Shazam’s administrative expenses also increased.

In 2016, the company posted £41.6 million ($54.8 million) in total administrative expenses.  That number jumped 35.2% to £56.3 million ($74.1 million) in 2017.

Had it not been for Apple’s $400 million acquisition late last year, the company would’ve likely drowned in debt, just as most music tech startups do.

Taking full advantage of the purchase, the Cupertino tech giant from the music identification app last December.

Now, as the app’s developers prepare to offer exclusive series content access on Apple Music, Books, TV, and Podcasts, Shazam has unveiled a new feature.

On Android, the Apple-owned app has launched Pop-Up Shazam.

In the company’s latest Android version of the app, Shazam quickly tracks and identify songs played through wired headphones and earbuds as well as wireless Bluetooth headsets.  In short, Pop-Up Shazam no longer needs to hear a song through your smartphone or tablet’s speaker.  The new feature tracks and identifies songs played on other apps.

The Pop-Up appears as a floating chat icon on your phone’s UI, similar to Facebook Messenger.  Once the app successfully identifies the song, users receive a notification featuring the song and artist name.  You can also access additional information, including a track’s complete lyrics.

To get started, Android users will first have to enable the notifications under Settings.  Strangely enough, the iOS version of Shazam hasn’t made the feature available just yet.  This may be due to an iOS restriction, which disables developers’ ability to access audio playing through another app.

It remains unclear when this feature will come to iOS, if ever.

The game developer announced that open beta for Fortnite mobile will be open to Samsung users starting today. "Pokémon GO" Teases Generation Four Update With Two Year Anniversary Image

Time sure does fly. It has already been two years since Niantic released the mobile game sensation Pokemon GO. Atlhough the hype has died down, to a certain extent, memories hundreds kids flooding the streets to “catch ’em all” are still fresh in our heads. When Pokemon GO dropped, it felt like everyone was playing the game. Kids were so distracted by their cell phones, they were walking into traffic and into other dangerous situations. Despite the gamers who lost their grip on reality, Pokemon GO was amazing for kids who never got out the house. Instead a game that rewarded children for staring at their television screen from their living room, Niantic created a game that encouraged going outside and traveling. Now, Niantic is gearing up to celebrate the two year anniversary their breakthrough game. 

Pokemon GO’s ficial Twitter released a new promotional image for their anniversary that hints at a generation four update. Along with several other Pokemon, the image includes Chimchar, Turtwig, and Piplup. Those three pocket monsters were the starter Pokemon from the Sinnoh region that was introduced in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl versions. Niantic has yet to release an ficial release date for the new Pokemon, but their annual Pokemon Fest takes place this month, so expect new Pokemon GO news very soon. 

"Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle" Update Allows Gamers To Summon Porunga

Porunga may not be as famous as Shenron, but he is just as powerful. The Namekian dragon is summoned once all seven dragon balls are collected on Piccolo’s home planet. According to GameRevolution, a new update in Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle allows gamers to summon the Namekian dragon. There are three sets Porunga Dragon Balls, so 21 in total, that need to be collected in a specific order to summon the bulky dragon. Clues within the game give players hints as to how to attain each dragon ball. Each set seven must be collected in order (the first set first, second set, etc.) for the summoning to work. Instagram Launches IGTV, Allows Users To Post Videos That Last 60 Minutes

Video content has become the most popular form social media. Instagram is aiming to compete with Snapchat, and possibly even YouTube, with their latest update. The social media site, which is owned by Facebook, is hosting an event today in which it is speculated that they will be introducing a new video function. Reports are swirling that Instagram will be fering a new extended video service. 

According to Tech Crunch, Instagram is set to introduce a new feature for longer videos that will function much like Snapchat’s Discovery section. Users will reportedly be able to upload videos that last up to 60 minutes, which is much longer than Instagram’s current one minute limit. CNET, who will be live streaming the event, reports that the new service is geared towards giving users a platform to tell much longer stories. Whether that be a political narrative, a travel vlog, or a makeup tutorial, Instagram wants to create a platform that allows users to promote their lifestyles. The long-running videos will be accompanied by ads so that users who bring in an enormous amount viewers can also get paid. The service will be called IGTV.
