Two months ago, Nikolas Cruz enacted a homicidal rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Equipped with a semi-automatic rifle, the 19 year-old blasted through the school’s hallways, killing 17 innocent people in the process. Cruz was eventually found by police and promptly detained, and is now awaiting his judicial fate in relation to his heinous crimes.
In an effort to mend the grief and despair he has inevitably manifested throughout the Parkland area, Cruz is looking to “heal the community” in any manner he can.
When the gunman turns 22, he is set to inherit a $800,000 trust fund in relation to his mother passing away. Speaking to a Broward County judge on Wednesday, Cruz’s lawyer Melissa McNeil notes how “Mr. Cruz does not want those funds, whatever money that he is entitled to. He would like that money donated to an organization that the victims’ family believes would be able to facilitate healing in our community or an opportunity to educate our community about the issues that have ripened over the last four or five months.”
Howard Finkelstein, another member Cruz’s legal team, exclaimed to the judge “let it go to those who have been hurt, period.”
Cruz’s lawyers are currently investigating if the instalments are paid monthly or yearly, and whether or not he is still entitled to the money.
For some reason, the man who killed 17 innocent lives at his high school in Parkland, Florida is getting tons fan mail while he’s facing the death penalty at The Broward County Jail. The Sun Sentinel reports that 17-year-old Nikolas Cruz has been flooded with love notes and money from teen girls in different states.
Some the letters include sexual photographs, letters encouragement, greeting cards and more.
“In my 40 years as public defender, I’ve never seen this many letters to a defendant,” Nikolas’ public defender Howard Finkelstein explained. “Everyone now and then gets a few, but nothing like this.” He added: “The letters shake me up because they are written by regular, everyday teenage girls from across the nation. That scares me. It’s perverted.”
The publication got its hands on some the notes and honestly, it’s pretty disturbing.
“You’re in a tough spot, Nik, and that is something I know, because I’ve been there myself,” one person wrote to him. “If you need something, I can mail to you…ask. If you need to talk…I’ll listen.”
“When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you,” an 18-year-old woman from Texas wrote. “Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on your face make you so handsome.”
Nikolas does not get to see all the letters that have been sent to him. Howard told the publication that they read him the “religious ones that extended wishes for his soul and to come to God.”
In Florida where Capital Punishment is a last resort, a grand jury has served 19 year old Nikolas Cruz with 34 counts premeditated murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting spree that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, exactly three weeks to the day.
The 34 number rounds up 17 counts premeditated murder and 17 charges attempted murder, the details which are well documented. Nikolas Cruz started started filing into random classrooms across various levels the building, spraying teachers and students with AR-15 fire. He proceeded to exit the establishment undetected until later being found idly on the side the street. After a two week recess, the school has finally reopened its doors. The students are without question the nation’s greatest instrument towards social change, if they choose to take up the cross.
Cruz has been held in isolation in Broward County Jail, for fear inmates spilling over his way. As the gun control debate reaches a fiery stage, this trial will likely be viewed as a watermark for future cases. A look inside Nikolai’s computer revealed deep-rooted bigotry and ties to white supremacist groups.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is still grieving from the loss 17 students and staff after Nikolas Cruz opened fire on campus on February 14th. Nikolas has since pleaded guilty and is in solidarity confinement. Police ficers have shared the 19-year-olds cell happenings and they’re quite disturbing.
Because his high prile status, Nikolas is locked away from others at Broward County Jail, The New York Post reports. On February 20th deputies said Nikolas “appeared to break out in laughter both during and immediately following his pressional visit at 1848 hours and later at 1910 hours.”
Other notes describe him as “well-groomed, calm/quiet demeanor, follows commands, talks stly and very little, responds to questions and appears slower than normal in his movement.”
From February 21st – 24th he was said to be “restless” and “tossing from time to time” and starring at the ceiling and wall. When his lawyers came to visit him, he was said to be “coherent” but “inmate was also observed smiling and giggling.”
Nikolas’ lawyer Gordon Weekes has since responded to the public telling his client’s jail behaviours where he said:
“They are snippets, observations from corrections ficers and are not clinical impressions made by his treating psychologist or psychiatrist at the jail. They don’t show a complete picture. They are generated because Mr. Cruz has a high-prile case and is on suicide watch.”
