Sparkle has obtained her share criticism following the finale Surviving R. Kelly. In the documentary sequence, the singer recalled how her 14-year-old niece was sexually abused by Kelly. The scenario culminated to a felony trial through which Sparkle served as a witness. DEspite her good seemingly good intentions and pressed remorse for having launched her household to the R&B icon, Sparkle is being dragged for the choice, particularly contemplating Kelly’s relationship with Aaliyah.
“Look, Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson was Robert’s supervisor …] So, you understand, that is not a query that everyone needs to be asking me,” she mentioned. “I did not see something with the Aaliyah factor. Even on the Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number CD—I did not sing on Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number …] I had no interplay in any respect.”

Sparkle futher defined why she did not query to platonic nature his relationship with the starlet. She could not think about him crossing the road given his supervisor’s familial ties.
“Who thought that was actual? You know what I imply I assumed that was a hoax that that is not actual, you understand? That was my naiveté considering that it wasn’t actual as a result of like once more, Barry Hankerson was there,” Sparkle mentioned. “This should not and could not have occurred. I am considering, ‘Now it is a hoax. Aaliyah is] solely 15. Oh, that is nothing. He cannot marry a younger lady.’ So, you understand, did not suppose something it. …] Well, after I noticed the wedding certificates and I used to be like, OK, possibly there’s one thing to it. But once more, I am considering the uncle was there, the dad and mom are there. This cannot be.”
Later she claims the unedited model her Lifetime interview might make clear the scenario.
“I sat there for 4 and a half, 5 hours talking the reality, and you may even see 10, 15 minutes me within the documentary, and there have been issues disregarded,” she mentioned. “There was issues spliced up, and also you know, I’ve wished that Lifetime would launch the unedited variations every thing that I said.”
