8 Different Illegal Streaming Site Operators Now Face Grand Jury Charges

A federal grand jury has charged eight men behind two of the largest illegal streaming operations in the US.

Illegal streaming sites Jetflicks and iStreamitAll were two subscription-based streaming sites. Thousands of movies and TV shows were available for subscribers to watch.

Earlier this week, the DoJ disclosed that eight individuals were indicted in a grand jury trial on Tuesday. The indictment says the men were running “two of the largest unauthorized streaming services in the United States.”

The charges in the case include conspiracy, criminal copyright infringement, and money laundering, with eight different individuals charged.

The operators are accused of running an unlicensed subscription-based service including live broadcast IPTV services. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) asked the Department of Justice to criminally prosecute these pirate streaming services.  The names of these services were handed off to DoJ officials and this case is part of those efforts.

The indictment lists the following men as defendants in the case: Kristopher Lee Dallmann, 36; Darryl Julius Polo, aka djppimp, 36; Douglas M. Courson, 59; Felipe Garcia, 37; Jared Edward Jaurequi, aka Jared Edwards, 38; Peter H. Huber, 61; Yoany Vaillant, aka Yoany Vaillant Fajardo, 38; and Luis Angel Villarino, 40.

The DoJ’s announcement says these men reproduced thousands of copyright television shows without authorization.

One of the defendants left Jetflicks to create a rival streaming service, iStreamItAll. Darryl Polo was also charged with two counts of criminal copyright infringement by distribution and four counts of money laundering.

Much of the content the services featured — over 115,849 television episodes and 10,511 movies — came from other pirate sources. The indictment cites , RARBG and Usenet, and Torrentz as sources for the pirated content.  Torrentz shut down in 2016 and was only a search engine with no direct links to infringing content.

iStreamItAll boasted that it had more content than Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and Amazon Prime combined.

These unlicensed services often sell for accessing the illegal content. Thus they generate money from a subscription service tied to a hardware box.  The difference is the content streamed to the box is unlicensed and obtained from already illegal sources.

Disney Gets a Surprise at Its D23 Expo: Musicians Demanding Better Pay

This past weekend, Disney held its D23 Expo, which is the largest Disney fan event in the world.

This year’s event, however, wasn’t just for fans. Musicians who work for the company, recording music for countless TV shows and movies, also attended as part of their efforts to attain a new contract relating specifically to new media.  Their presence wasn’t exactly part of the experience Disney was hoping for.

During the event, Disney musicians not only engaged with fans but also performed music.  The power of a lovely tune lured in Disney enthusiasts, who quickly learned about various compensation qualms.  Most importantly, the musicians let people know about their #BandTogether movement, which is fighting for an updated contract for streaming platforms.

#BandTogether is more than just about Disney.

American Federation of Musicians (AFM) members from all the major studios, such as ABC, CBS, NBCUniversal, Sony, Warner Bros., MGM and Paramount would like to gain wages and residuals for their music that appears on streaming platforms. That is getting extra attention following the launch of Disney, the latest subscription streaming launch from a major media behemoth.

Danita Ng-Poss, who is both an orchestrator and a music preparation worker, says that what she and her colleagues are doing in order to get paid properly will determine not only their future, but the future of all musicians that come after them.

“We owe it to our friends and colleagues to ensure we are all paid properly,” Ng-Poss said.  “We also have a responsibility to pass along a career with proper pay to those who are starting out in the business, just like musicians who came before did for us.”

At the moment, the studios are refusing to pay residuals to musicians for new media productions, and the AFM insists that this threatens their livelihood. They further insist that they will step up their efforts to win a fair contract in the lead up to the next round of negotiations between them and the studios later this year.

“The music we make lives on for generations. A residual payment is only fair,” said P. Blake Cooper, recording musician and director on the board of Los Angeles AFM Local 47. “It’s the only way to actually make a real living doing this work.”

The AFM believes that their #BandTogether campaign is gaining support not just from fellow labor unions but also from the community as a whole.

Earlier this summer in June, the AFM held a press conference for the campaign, in which leaders of both SAG-AFTRA and WGA-West spoke in favor of the musicians’ demands. This included Angelina Burnett, who is a board member of WGA-West, and Jane Austin, who is the SAG-AFTRA national secretary and treasurer and the Los Angeles chapter president.

Quentin Tarantino Speaks On MCU Referencing His Work In Their Films

Did you miss the Pulp Fiction reference in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Samuel L. Jackson stars in both films, and he is the connection between the MCU and the Quentin Tarantino classic. How so? Well, back in Winter Soldier, Nick Fury is forced to fake his own death. When Captain America and Falcon visit his grave,  the Bible passage Ezekiel 25:17 is etched on the tombstone. The famous Bible quote goes, “The path the righteous man…” If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the speech Jackson’s character Jules Winnfield uses in Pulp Fiction before killing his opponents.

Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed to SlashFilm that they struggled to figure out what should be on Fury’s tombstone. Joe believes it was their visual effects supervisor Dan Deleeuw that came up with the idea. “I think it was,” Russo stated. “But again, you know, we’re always because we’re geeks and we love that kind stuff, when we make movies, we’re always trying to put it in the movies, our movies for other people, our TV shows. So it’s better to put something in there that is a wink and a smile and excites people than just something bland, you know?”

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Quentin Tarantino comments on the universe sharing moment. “I knew it was coming because I ended up watching Sam Jackson on the Jimmy Fallon show, and Jimmy Fallon mentioned it,” Tarantino stated on the topic Fury’s tombstone. “Well, the fact that I grew up with Marvel comic books, and you know, the Marvel universe, before it was a cinematic universe. When it was just basically Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Roy Thomas’s web-spinning…enough said.”

Tyler Perry & BET Partner Up For Streaming Service Offer

There are reportedly over 200 streaming services in the United States alone, and now Tyler Perry and BET want a piece the pie. The media mogul and the popular urban network are planning to launch a new subscription-based streaming service called BET+. According to Deadline, they will fer TV shows and films from fellow Viacom flagships MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central. It’s believed that Perry will begin plugging the service and the forthcoming BET Awards.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see original programming, including both films and television series, flooding the streaming service from Tyler Perry Studios, too. There’s not yet word on how much the service will cost viewers, but Deadline suggests that it will be comparable, if not slightly less, than what’s currently being fered in the market. The Wall Street Journal spoke to a source who claims to have intimate knowledge the deal, and they made it clear that BET and Perry are looking to tap into the African American market, not become the next big global competitor.

“This really suggests quite a significant opportunity to complement the services that are out there,” the person said. “This is not about replacing a Netflix or replacing a Hulu or replacing an Amazon.”
