Adidas Secures U.S. Copyright Protection for Yeezy Sneaker Designs

Adidas has won a copyright decision to protect some of the design elements of Kanye’s iconic Yeezy sneakers.

The sneaker company filed for copyright protection of these elements on the Yeezy Boost 350 versions 1 and 2.  However, the filing was initially denied — twice.

Then, a sharp reversal occurred.  Earlier this month, the Review Board of the U.S. Copyright Office reversed the denial for the “2-D artwork and sculpture” of the sneakers.

It’s been a long-fought battle.  Adidas first filed its copyright registration for Versions 1 & 2 of the back in 2017. Since then, the company has been fighting to get the application approved.

According to the filing descriptions, the Version 1 design of the Yeezy Boost 350 sneaker features “irregular black lines of various lengths and shapes on a gray fabric with a black semi-circle in the arch and an orange dotted stripe on an off-white heel loop.”

The Version 2 design of the Yeezy Boost 350 sneaker is described as “several grey lines in a wave pattern with a thick orange stripe on the outsole that fades toward the heel of the sneaker with a secondary inner orange layer that adds intermittent orange coloring.”

The U.S. Copyright Office first refused the registration for the iconic sneakers in February 2018.

The office argued that the sneakers themselves are useful articles that could not be copyrighted. Copyright protection only extends to creative, separable elements of useful articles, not the articles themselves.

Adidas asked the office to reconsider its ruling, but was handed yet another denial. This time, the office said there wasn’t enough of a unique design to copyright.  After a second request for reconsideration, the Review Board decided that the design elements on the sneaker are protectable by copyright law.

Now, the matter has been punted back down to the Registration Policy and Practice division for final registration.

One the latest colorways to surface is the “Glow In The Dark” model which is covered in yellowish green primeknit. The whole shoe is covered in the yellowish green glow and lights up in the dark which makes its name fairly appropriate. Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 "Glow" Dropping In Full Family Sizing: Details

One the most hyped up Yeezy releases the year will be dropping later this month on May 25th in the form the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Glow In The Dark” model. It’s a pretty basic shoe as far as the colorway considering its completely covered in a yellowish-green hue. While some people aren’t the biggest fans the colorway, perhaps the coolest part about it is the fact that it literally glows in the dark. A 350 V2 colorway has yet to do this so fans are pretty excited to see what it will look like in person.

While fans await the launch the shoe, they should find solace in the fact that the sneaker will release in full family sizing as per Yeezy Mafia. The shoe, which comes with a translucent stripe, will come in infant and kids sizes so if you want to cop for yourself, you’ll be able to match with the little ones in your life.

In addition to the Glow in the Dark colorway, fans will have a chance to grab the “Black” and “Black Reflective” colorways on June 8th and June 7th respectively.

Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 "Clay" Restocking In Infant & Kids Sizes

One the biggest Yeezy releases the year so far was the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Clay.” The shoe was part a three-sneaker pack, with each pair being region-locked. The “Clay” model was for those in North, Central, and South America and so far, it has some pretty hefty resale prices. Demand was high for the sneaker although as is usually the case with Yeezy’s, the demand was somewhat deflated.

If you missed out on the shoe the first time, you’ll actually have a second crack at it although unfortunately, it won’t be for adult sizes. According to Sole Collector, Adidas plans to re-release the “Clay” colorway in kids and infant sizes on May 18th. Kanye West has been making a concerted effort to sell Yeezys that will fit the whole family. The fact that the smaller sizes are restocking is further pro that this effort is actually being made and not just an empty promise.

The infant sizes will cost $140 USD, while the kid’s sizes are $160 USD. You will be able to cop them on adidas.com and Yeezy Supply as May 18th.
